Investigation Of Diversification And Internationalization Strategies On Business Group Level in Emerging Markets: The Case Of Dogus Group

Abstract

In this research, industrialdiversification and internationalization strategies of the Dogus Holdingbusiness group were examined by a case study research design, and the logic ofstrategic behaviors of the group was tried to be revealed. The examples of thebusiness group form, which is widely seen in the major business sectors indeveloping countries, are the diversified family holdings in Turkey. Accordingto the findings of this research, which is based on theories that provide conceptualexplanations to business groups in the context of developing countries, it is areference to the presentation of the logic of the Group's diversificationstrategy with explanations that the three theoretical approaches in theliterature review (institutional voids, political economics and resource-basedview). The OLI Model, which explains the internationalization of businesses,has often been criticized for being inadequate in explaining the businesses indeveloping countries, and it has been argued that the LLL Model representsbusinesses in these countries more widely. When the Doğuş Group'sinternationalization is examined, it appears that OLI Model and SpringboardPerspectives have come to the fore in explaining the rationale of internationalization.In this context, it can be said that Doğuş Group is not a typicaldeveloping-country-business-group. Looking at the researches of the businessgroups in the literature, it is rare to see studies that deal withdiversification and internationalization strategies at the business group levelsimultaneously. Especially in Turkey the researches of business groups havebeen limited. For this reason, it is thought that the contribution of thisresearch to the accumulation of scientific knowledge in the field is important.It may be said that the findings obtained especially as a result of theresearch provide a differentiating pattern from the theoretical explanations,making the research valuable in the context of originality.
